Nice bag with thoughtful features. Stuffsack ends are a negative. No PFAs is a huge plus!
The first thing that caught my eye about the Coleman Kompact Sleeping Bag was: no PFAs! When everything out there seems to have hidden PFAs in it, itâs a relief to be able to source safer materials for my family. This is a really great initiative, and I hope many other companies start offering PFAs-free products too.The box it arrives in is small at 9½ â x 9½â x 16â. The sleeping bag roll itself is only 10â wide x15â long. So it really is compact, as promised.I noticed many thoughtful touches. The fabric outside is slick and smooth, but the fabric inside is soft and cozy. The fabric and fiberfill on the inside extend an inch past the zipper on one side, creating a small flap to prevent drafts. There are little toggles and loops on the outside, to help keep it folded when rolling up. The zipper pull on the inside is big and easy to grab. Theyâve added a big red plastic nubbin to the top of the zipper pull, to prevent fabric from being caught in the zipper when closing. We donât have any camping trips this month, so I tried it out inside. I canât speak to how it performs in cold weather, but I can tell you that in a 70 degree house, the zipped-up sleeping bag is toasty. However, it is only a 30 degree bagâ and when I held it up to a bright light I could see light through the fiberfillâ so if I were using this in cold weather, Iâd add a blanket or tarp on top to increase the heat trapping. The stuff sack has a fabric cap (like a rain fly) at one end that covers the top hole of the stuff sack, and that cap connects with a built-in fabric cap at the other end via two cinch straps. The cinch straps make convenient handles for carrying or for tying on to a backpack. However, at both ends are round circles of a somewhat noisy and crinkly material that has sales information printed on it: âColeman Kompact 30* SLEEPING BAG, COLETHERM MAX, Premium & Lightweight Fill with Superior Heat Retention, COMPRESSIBLE STUFF SACK For Optimal Storageâ¦â etc. along with a picture of the sleeping bag, warranty info, and bar code. Essentially, the ends of the stuff sack have all the shelf data. This is unpleasant; when I go on vacation, I donât want to take advertising into the wilderness with me. And it creates visual clutter when hiking.Coleman uses a string system called âQuick Cordâ to bundle up the sleeping bag. When the sleeping bag is rolled up, a sewn-in string loop at the foot of one half is caught and pulled by a string-and-clip on the other half. Itâs clever, but it doesn’t seem safe to have a cord loop built in. If I had young kids, I would clip the loop on one side and just tie up the bag normally.Overall, this is a nice lightweight sleeping bag that was thoughtfully designed. And no PFAs!

Warm & cozy, well built, heavy and large for something called Kompact though
This is a nice sleeping bag thatâs well suited to car camping or keeping inside an RV due to its size. Itâs a large bag when stored away but is nonetheless quite warm and well built as Iâd expect from Coleman. Iâm not quite sure how they can call it compact, but I think theyâre comparing it to their other sleeping bags, which are large, and not the more ultralight oriented âbackpackingâ style of sleeping bags. I did find it quite cozy though and donât really have any complaints with it; it feels very durable, the materials seem high quality and the zipper is smooth. I think itâs a good value compared to many of the premium brands, especially if the size and weight isnât a concern. It doesnât have any bells and whistles or try to do anything different, itâs just a well made, warm sleeping bag and for my purposes, car camping, it worked out well for me and Iâm quite pleased with it.

Warm and cozy
The sleeping bag feels well-made with good stitching and strong zippers. I like how the polyester of the lining is softer and more cotton-like than the exterior. The filler feels thick and cushiony – my son (14) when testing it said it was comfortable even on a hard floor. We had our kids test it in about 55deg temperatures and one said it was the pleasantly warm and the other said it was fine but he wouldn’t have complained to have another blanket. Packing it back up, their “ZipPlow” zipper design probably decreased the number of zipper snags but certainly didn’t eliminate them, and it was a bit of work getting it back into its stuff sack but quite doable. I like that the tie-string doesn’t actually require tying, and if I had shortened the side that has the hook it might have gone in the sack more easily. In general I really like the bag – it’s much better than the ones I had when I was younger.

Not going to work at 30 degrees.
Have a winter camping trip planned and think I’ll be taking a different bag. This bag is smooth on the skin, but is the same weight of fill as my 50 degree bag. Maybe 30 is the temperature you can survive hypothermia, but might not have all of the feeling in your fingers and toes? Used the bag inside my 60 degree house, and didn’t feel like I would be comfortable below 50. Barely felt warm. Maybe it’s magical, but I’m not thinking that it will be a benefit past September or before May. If I fully test it and am wrong, I will edit my review, but like I said. I wasn’t warm at 60. Felt like a plain comforter.

Nipping at Northface’s heels
Colmeman produced a high value sleeping bag in the Kompact with features usually reserved for the higher brands. The Kompact is soft inside, sleek outside. There’s a draftstopper for the length of the zipper. It has a thicker top band for your face area. It’s not meant to go over your head, so you’ll want a separate camp pillow or other solution for that. The stuff sack is the thing giving me the most North Face vibes. It’s similar to my old TNF stuff sack with the internal flap to keep the bag in and dirt out.As to the 30* rating, maybe in a zipped up tent. The square sections are on the thin side of the sub freezing spectrum in terms of loft. Speaking of loft, an organized rolling will seriously extend the life of this bag. Treat it well.A good deal in the $70s (current price).

Quality sleeping bag by Coleman. Light and compact – easy to take around!
I don’t know a lot about camping but I do know that Coleman is a premier name in the camping world. This sleeping bag really shows why. It truly is “Kompact”, rolls up nice and compact making it easy to take it around. Zipper works better than most other cheaper sleeping bags I’ve had to use in the past. Keeps me nice and warm!
